====== Reading ====== See also: [[Read|Books I've Read]] and [[toread|Books I Want to Read]] === Books I'm currently reading === * [[wp>Project Hail Mary]] by [[wp>Andy Weir]] - I'm only a few chapters in and I already know I'm going to finish this one before going back to the other books I'm currently reading. * [[wp>Absolution Gap]] by [[wp>Alastair Reynolds]] - Struggling to get into Reynolds, but I'm trying. * [[wp>The Dispossed]] by [[wp>Ursula K Le Guin]] * [[wp>Gridlinked]] by [[wp>Neal Asher]] * [[wp>Feersum Endjinn]] by [[wp>Iain M. Banks]] - I was just lamenting that I'd read all of Banks' work and realised this one had escaped my attention (probably because it wasn't a Culture story). Happy to have found it and made a start now at least. * [[wp>Startide Rising]] by [[wp>David Brin]] - Audiobook in the background while I do some tasks. Some interesting ideas so far. * [[wp>Rapture of the Nerds|Rapture of the Nerds: A tale of the singularity, posthumanity, and awkward social situations]] by [[wp>Cory Doctorow]] and [[wp>Charles Stross]] - I could almost have guessed the authors of this book just by reading the first couple of chapters. It's exactly what I expected/was hoping for. Not sure I'd be able to recommend it to any one but the hardcore fans of both though (it's not their most accessible work). Enjoying it so far. * [[wp>Burning Chrome]] by [[wp>William Gibson]] - I was particularly interested in reading one of the short stories, Hinterlands, recommended on a reddit thread somewhere but I'd been planning on reading more of William Gibson so this seemed like a good place to start/continue. I'd read it before, but enjoying it. Looking for some inspiration around VR worlds/games. === On hold === * [[wp>Star Maker]] by [[wp>Olaf Stapledon]] - Borrowed this from Munro to read for a bookgroup. I found the first chapter overly flowery but by the second chapter I was hooked, and now I'm amazed how ahead of its time it was (for 1937). Still reading, waiting to find out about the Dyson/Stapledon sphere (started reading July 2017) * [[wp>Sum: Tales from the Afterlives]] by [[wp>David Eagleman]] - Munro gave me this, I've read a handful of the shorts already, some pretty interesting ones so far. (started reading March 2017) * [[wp>Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers]] by [[wp>Mary Roach]] - Mentioned on Slashdot, sounds interesting. It'd been om my to-read list since Sep 2009. It's now my non-fiction bedside book (started reading in Dec 2016) * [[wp>Transmetropolitan]] by [[wp>Warren Ellis]] - Not a novel, but a collection of 60 comics put together. I'm impressed with it so far, I like Spider (started reading in March 2016)
