I'm currently contributing toward the Rosetta@home (hackers.town team) projects on the BOINC network as well as Folding@Home (hackers.town team) - both projects are currently working on protein folding for COVID-19.

Of course, like all geeks, I cut my teeth by contributing to SETI@home in the past, when it was still in operation, as

Inspired by Shaarli's bookmarklet, I created this javascript laden anchor tag on a blank HTML page:

<a title="Drag this link to your bookmarks toolbar or right-click it and Bookmark This Link, then click ✚read it later button in any page you want to add to your wiki" class="bookmarklet-link" href="java…

I often seemed to be manually converting tables into markdown so I wrote a quick script to convert copy and pasted comma (or tab) seperated tables into dokuwiki table markdown.

I feel like gaslighthing foreigners about Haggis is a national pastime that people take part in with very little coordination or prompting. I guess its mostly gone now that people have instant access to Wikipedia, but I've had lots of these conversations over the years and people jump into it with such vigor and imagination that it's a little scary. The first time I remember it was about 2003, talking to an American guy at the bar in Usige Betha (now The Dram).

Remembrance

Written November 2005.

In deep dark cold November

We gather to remember

Remember boys and men

Butchered slaughtered way back then

They gave their lives for us we are told

The men and boys who never got old

But if truth be told it's where politicians fail

Since around 2005 my mum has taken an average of 3,200 pictures a year. That's after I removed all duplicate files. I'm still deciding on what software to suggest she uses to manage her archive of around 43k photos. In the meantime I wanted to generate some stats with the goal of making a simple interface for her to browse the backup I have of her archive (by date and maybe location).

Glasgow council make their licensing information public, but it's only available as a weekly (ish) Excel file (with seven sheets each seperated by 'minor', 'major', 'premises', 'personal' etc. Not very accessible - but at least it's available. This is a project that attempts to make the information more useful - it's also able to list upcoming 'special events' (based on extended licence hours for a particular night/event etc).

People used to ask why I was always able to spot any mention of the club or my name etc on r/glasgow and response to comments so quickly.

On Matrix we had every comment and post relayed to the 'firehose' room. It was generally set to notification off/silent, but you could easily add custom keywords like 'mckillop' or 'gamer club' and it would notify you when the keyword was in a post or comment (with a handy 'reply-to' link).

In my opinion: NFTs are a scam. They aren't an example of new technology that has any benefit. Their only success is down to good marketing and the gullibility of the masses. I find it hard to explain to those who ask me about it though. I thought this analogy was good, so I thought I'd keep a note of it here (originally taken from a reddit post,

	* Swatting: Ghost In The Machine (1993) - Earliest example of Swatting I've noticed so far. The characters unplugged all the power so an evil AI (soul in the machine thing) couldn't get to them. So the AI/evil guy told all the different police cars that there was an armed robbery/hostage situation etc at a property, then when they all arrived, it overrode an electric pylon causing a bang which made them all fire into the house.

The Famous People Game

Everybody writes down the names of famous people on three slips of paper, folds them and puts them in a pot to create a big selection of possible names. Then we divide into teams and take turns at describing them verbally (like Articulate, without saying the name). We take a final score on how many each team managed to successfully de…
